Art Auction at The Village Art Gallery

De Rust, Western Cape.

WOW! The first ever art auction to be held in De Rust took place last night. It was organised by Brende Brits the owner of The Village Art Gallery.

Just over 50 paintings were submitted and sold. The unique thing about this auction, which was organised to raise funds for charity, was that the names of the artists were covered by the entry number. This meant that buyers were bidding on the work and not the name. And, there were some well known artists who submitted pieces for the auction.

Brende (right) chatting to Ella Heyns. Jady Heyns with back to camera.

Just a few of the big names; Glendine, Diane McLean, Ella, Neels Coetzee and Billy Strapp. Buyers really snapped up excellent pieces at way below market prices. I was standing with Jady Heyns, the well know movie producer of Hidden Camera, when he offered a lady double what she had paid for a Neels Coetzee Klein Karoo Landscape of the Rooikoppe. She had bought it for R2400.

Diane McLean fetched the highest price of R3200 for a still life; a twig of Klapperbos blooms on an old enamel plate. For non South Africans Klapperbos is the Chinese Lantern.

All paintings had to be 400mm x 300mm. Mediums used were pencil sketches, water colours, acrylics and oils.

The most exciting part of the evening was when the paintings submitted by our daughters, Sarah, Hannah and Emily, were auctioned. The story leading up to that point was quite traumatic for them. The pictures below depict the works in progress.

Sarah adding colour.

Kathryn, my wife, guided the three girls through each step of their paintings; practicing brush strokes and blending of colours; done first of all on paper. Then to the canvass.

Hannah applying texture.

The day after the paintings were submitted, Brende contacted us to say that the paintings could not be accepted because the auction was only open to adults, and there wasn’t a children’s section. They were quite upset and a few tears were shed but they soon puckered up when we said that we would hang their paintings in our home. What also helped was that Brende gave them vouchers for a free milkshake at the Village Trading Post.

Emily explaining to mom what she is doing!

Yesterday morning, the day of the auction, we went to collect their paintings and enjoy the milkshakes at the Trading Post. Brende informed us that she had discussed it with the auctioneer and she had agreed to do a pre-auction sale for the girls’ paintings. So last night the girls were called forward to hold up their paintings for all to see… and they sold for R270 as a set. They were more than happy to be able to make a contribution to the charity fund.

The photo below shows them holding up their works during their “private auction.” My camera’s flash decided not to work properly… sorry for the dark pic.

Overall it was a wonderful evening, blessed with beautiful weather… a cool Klein Karoo night breeze, after a rather warm day. We are privileged to live in De Rust.

We are already into the second month of the New Year. I trust that your year has started off well and will get even better.

The De Rust Farmers Market is starting off in 2012 with what promises to be a greater selection of products. They are expanding to other products as well. Many people have been asking for arts and crafts and so they are going to oblige and give them what they want.

De Rust Wire Car Competition

Really sad news… we have had to cancel the Wire Car Competition.

No names no pack drill. I just did not come together.

All is not lost. Some of the parents have suggested that we arrange a meeting with interested parents and children and start again. We are very keen to do this and get it going.

The sponsored prizes that we have will be held over for the BIG DAY!

All is not lost.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. One of our local newspapers had already arranged for a photographer.

We will keep you posted.

Best regards.

Events and Happenings in the South Cape and Klein Karoo

Hi there,

Just to let you know about our new website South Cape and Klein Karoo Diary. Please, before you read any further, subscribe to the Newsletter by using to form on the right. Keep up to date with what is happening in the region.

We started last month with some exciting happenings in the area and you can check these out on the website.

The purpose of this website (actually based on a blogging platform to encourage interaction – communication) is threefold:

Firstly: To advertise various functions, local activities, things to do in your area and community related projects, by way of a monthly newsletter. These ads are placed free of charge. Yes, free of charge even if it is an event, activity that charges a fee. Why give away advertising space? Simple; to promote our region. See explanation after the third purpose below!

Secondly: To publish interesting information on the region known as the South Cape which incorporates the Southern Cape Coast from Nature’s Valley to Agulhas, The Garden Route and Route 62 through this area, and inland to the Swartberg Mountains which covers the Klein Karoo. We will stretch the coverage to bordering towns as well.

Thirdly: We wish to promote a “cross pollination of tourists/visitors in this region. Every town in the region will benefit if we grasp the vision of promoting it as a whole. Reciprocal advertising and referrals will benefit the entire region.

Why Cross P0llination? We need to promote “local tourism” throughout the region. Why local you ask. Well the statistics show that international tourism is on the decline due to the global economy. The two exceptions possibly are upmarket packages and the rise in visitors from India. According to Hein Gertsner of the Cango Caves there was a marked increase in local visitors whilst international tourists showed a large decline in numbers; mainly from Europe. A very interesting fact was in increase in visitors from India which reflected an increase of 50%. At this moment the Cango Caves together with the Greater Oudtshoorn Tourism Bureau are marketing our region at the India Road Show.

Back to the local scenario.

We need to share our visitors by giving them an experience of the bigger picture of our beautiful area. Here is an example of this kind of marketing. A special offer given to encourage visitors to experience neighbouring towns and activities. Before you check it out I would like to a add real life example of what I am talking about when I say “cross pollination” of local visitors. Just this morning I was doing duty in the De Rust Info Office when a couple walked in at about 11:00. They had driven through from George. “What can we see or do in De Rust for a couple of hours,” the husband asked? My first suggestion was lunch in one of our restaurants and then a drive through Meieringspoort to visit the Waterfall. They were happy with that; took a map and off they went.

Now if they had asked their hosts in George and they could make a suggestion it would be a classic example of cross pollination. And, imagine the good report on TripAdvisor.

Back to the special offer above. This was given to get extra bed nights sure but it also suggested a day trip visiting four other places of interest. Excellent cross pollination. Not just keeping the visitors in one place. Let them experience more of our region. Check out the example here.

A big thing to remember here is to start thinking outside of the box. Most towns on the coast are no more than two hours away from an inland destination and vice versa. For inland towns, think shark diving and crocodile diving (in cages of course). Coastal towns, think wine routes, inland mountain passes and fynbos tours. How about an ostrich show farm… no the ostrich is not extinct; yet??? Contact the establishment and set up a discount deal with a coupon/code and offer it to your guests. They will love you for it. And, when they get home you will be recommended to their friends for the unforgettable experience YOU sent them on.

Go ahead… just do it. And please we need for for all three purposes above. Send us your Happenings, Info on your area and your cross pollination articles/ads. Send all your copy to admin@southcapekleinkaroodiary.com

As you see above, I have put in links to “other” places in the region. Spreading a little tourism love. Work out a deal with someone, write an article for your website and include their link with a coupon/code. Then advertise it in the South Cape and Klein Karoo Diary.

Become a pioneer in the cross pollination of local tourism in our beautiful region. Please give feedback, ideas etc, This is a joint effort.

Sit back and enjoy the party!

Best regards,

Jack.

P.S. If you haven’t done so, please go to the subscription form on the top right and join our community/Newsletter. Thanks.

The main waterfall at Meiringspoort is 60m high and falls into a deep pool ideal for swimming. For the more daring there are some ledges high up on the rocks… for jumping off.

Ethan with his Wire 4X4.

This is my grandson, Ethan, with the Christmas present we gave him last year. It was made by one of the local school children.

The competition will be open to all the local school children in De Rust. They will receive their entry forms at school this week . This will give them a lot of time to build their cars during the school holidays.

There will be two main categories within the High school and Primary school sections. They are Sedans and SUVs.  There will also be prizes for the most creative use of materials and the overall Champion.

Later in 2012 we will be putting out a challenge to schools in Oudtshoorn. The plan is to make this a big annual event.

If anyone would like to sponsor prizes, please contact me at jackviljoen@gmail.com.

There is no entry fee for the children. This is a De Rust community project.

Meiringspoort Half Marathon – De Rust

Share

The Meiringspoort Half Marathon in De Rust is all set to GO!

De Rust is ready for you.

Our little village has been hectically busy for this past week getting set up to welcome all our visitors for the marathon. Great excitement and anticipation.

On Tuesday afternoon I was helping out at our Tourism Office and it was literally buzzing. Many people were still calling to find accommodation. At the moment in this part of the Little Karoo here in the Western Cape beds are at a premium.

Even yesterday residents were still letting us know that they had reorganised their homes to accommodate extra people.

One of the unique aspects of this event is the transporting of the runners to the starting line. Now if you know this part of our country you will relate it to ostriches. And, if you have driven in the area you will have seen the huge trucks transporting these big birds.

Yep, that is how we get everyone to the starting line. Ostrich Trucks. Sorry, CLEAN Ostrich Trucks :-) Add that one to your list of “Been there, Done that, Got the T-shirt.” Oh yes! Speaking of T-Shirts, you must get one of our “Town of the Year 2011.” Stock is limited.

The Weather in De Rust this weekend.

Friday 14th October. Min 18 and Max 27 with a 30% chance of 4mm of rain. It is now 09h00 as I write this and it is partly cloudy but mainly sunny. So the campers should stay dry. Forecast 20kph winds but up to now it is breathless.

Saturday 15th October. Min 12 and Max 20 sunny with no rain. So, it should be a nice cool run. Last year it was a lot cooler. Forecast 20kph winds.

Sunday 16th October. Min 12 and Max 24 and cloudy with a 30% chance of 2mm of rain. Nice cool day for driving home.

Who is going to set a new Route Record? Isaac Opperman from Wellington won the race the first three years . The route record of 1:04:06 was set by him in 1994 and has not been improved since.

We look forward to welcoming you in De Rust for the running of the 19th Meiringspoort Half Marathon. In 2009 Bruce Fordyce took part and wrote an article after the race saying that it was pleasing to see that De Rust wasn’t the one horse town he remembered from his army days. Bruce has indicated that he wants to join in our celebrations next year(2012) when the race will have been presented for two decades.

Best regards,

Jack.

P.S. Don’t forget to grab one of our brochures to use for planning a longer stay in De Rust next time. Loads of info on What To Do, Where To Stay and Where To Eat.

De Rust – Farmers Market

We were blessed with a truly beautiful day for our monthly Farmers Market in De Rust.

The initiative for this venture was taken by Candy White of Housemartin Guest Lodge and Plough Restaurant. Candy can be seen in action below preparing their delicious wood-fired pizzas.

De Rust Western Cape, Farmers Market

Candy of Housemartin Guest Lodge

There was a large variety of produce available from freshly harvested spinach to seedlings. And of course my homemade chunky chilli relish. Home baked breads and farm butter alongside Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil from a local farmer. Pancakes with sugar and cinnamon, always a favourite, drew the folk to the table selling delicious raw honey… good marketing tactic :-)

Sarah and Hannah, our two daughters, spent Friday evening making and packaging popcorn. I made them trays to hang from their necks. They were so excited… their first business venture. By mid morning they had sold all their popcorn and made a good profit after paying mom for the ingredients. Well, they have to learn the right way from the start don’t they? Anyway they can’t wait for the market next month.

The was a busload of tourists, staying at the excellent accommodation at Housemartin, who also join in the festivities after breakfast at the Plough Restaurant.

See you there,

Meiringspoort Marathon – De Rust – Entries Closed.

Share

The Entries for the Meiringspoort Half Marathon in De Rust are Closed.

Good News and Bad News. I have just confirmed with the local organising committee that all entries for the 21,1 km  and the 10 km are closed! This also includes the 10 km Walk.

The entries have been overwhelming partly due to the Meiringspoort race gaining popularity and also because of De Rust winning the South African and Namibia Town of the Year 2011.

There is great concern for the safety of the runners through the poort. This is the top priority at present as we don’t want the event marred by an accident.

Accommodation in De Rust, neighbouring farms and towns is chock-a-block. If your are within a day outing drive then it will be well worth the visit. The village will be buzzing.

Regards,

Jack.
